In today’s data-driven world, we have never had more information to show us what our customers are doing, what are their interests, what do they want, and what products do they purchase. Thanks to this data, we know a great deal about consumer choices, purchases and behaviors. We know what our customers are doing, but can the data tell us why they arrived at their decisions?

We can encounter a customer at the perfect time and in the perfect place, but if our message does not then resonate with that customer, the moment passes and the opportunity is likely lost. Why was missing from the equation. Brands that can figure out the why beyond the what can start to bridge the expectation gap and become truly relevant to their target audiences.

By profiling more than 400,000 people in 70 markets across the world, we identified six core whys – we call them Motivations – that drive everyone at varying levels: Accomplishment, Affection, Information, Possession, Power and Protection.
